Search on for Casino Royale Bond Girl
The heat is on to find the latest Bond girl! The newest James Bond film, currently in the works, is as of yet, missing one of the most potent ingredients in the fail-proof James Bond movie recipe: the sexy Bond girl sidekick!
Filming of Casino Royale, the 21st Bond movie, is billed to begin this January. However, so far, all of the beautiful young starlets approached to audition for the part have turned down the opportunity. Charlize Theron, Angelina Jolie, and Scarlett Johansson, according to the London tabloid The Sun, have all told producers that they do not want to be Bond girls in Casino Royale.
Sienna Miller also turned down the role, but not before she made some decidedly undiplomatic comments. "I don't think it's the right time for me to be a Bond girl. It may undo all the hard work I have been doing this year," said Ms. Miller.
Her cattiness is understandable; the newest actor to play the womanizing, casino-hopping James Bond is British actor Daniel Craig, who is Ms. Miller’s former boyfriend. Mr. Craig is the 6th James Bond 007.
Michael G. Wilson addressed the issue of a Bond girl at a London press conference that took place last month. "The frame [for casting the girl] is very wide now. We wanted to make the 007 casting first. Now it's an open casting, we're looking for someone to do a very important job in this role.”
Director Martin Campbell added, "It's probably the best Bond girl role written. The two screenwriters adapted it, [but] the character Vesper Lynd remains intact from Ian Fleming's book. We have to get a terrific actress. She has to look beautiful. She spends a lot of time with Bond, so whoever we pick, she has to have all of those attributes."
At a press conference held for Daniel Craig, the actor was asked about his own preferences as to a co-star for Casino Royale. However, Mr. Craig was mum; all he would say was that his favorite Bond girl ever was Diana Rigg from "On Her Majesty's Secret Service."
Casino Royale is a remake of a 1967 film, based on a book by Ian Fleming. The original Casino Royale was marketed by featuring a nude, tattooed woman on posters and print ads- a scandalous strategy by the standards of the late 1960s.
Some devout fans of the original Casino Royale have complained that the remake is a bit too cleaned-up for their tastes. For one thing, Hollywood matron Judi Dench will play M in the new Casino Royale. Some object to a woman, even one so imposing as Ms. Dench, in the role of the big boss. Others don’t like the fact that, although James Bond lights up dozens of times in the original Casino Royale, he will not smoke once in the new version.
