Niagara Residents and Businessowners Divided over New Seneca Casino Complex
A new casino and hotel complex will open this Friday on the U.S. side of Niagara Falls. The casino compound will be owned and operated by the Seneca Nation of Indians.

The casino and adjoining hotel stands 26 stories high, and will feature convention rooms, two restaurants, an upscale bar, and a performance center. The casino center is estimated to have cost approximately $200 million to build- a sum which dwarfs other large-scale investments in the area. The casino and related buildings will occupy almost 15,000 square feet.

The hotel will be nothing short of “sumptuous,” according to David Rosenwasser, president of the Niagara Tourism and Convention Corp. Its 604 rooms and 86 suites will be equipped with hot tubs, high-speed internet connections, and flat-screen TVs.

Current residents and business owners are torn as to whether they welcome the new casino complex, or dread its Friday opening. Some say that the new hotel will change the city in an irreparably negative way, turning what was once a rather quaint upstate New York city into a flashy boomtown.

Paul Gromosiak is a Niagara Falls historian who is committed to preservation of the regions’s traditional character. He is upset by the Senecas’ commercialization of their tribal symbol, the feather, the casino rendition of which will be 19 stories high, and made of bright lights.

"The feather is their symbol," Gromosiak objected. "It's not to be lit up, to be seen for dozens of miles, and not to be used as a means for advertising."

Some business owners fear the competition that the new casino complex will bring. They cite the Seneca nation’s exemption from taxation on proceeds from the casino complex, which they say will make it easy for the Senecas to offer their amenities at competition- killing low prices. Those in the opposing camp believe that the changes brought by the new casino and hotel complex will be just what the city needs. They hope that the new casino complex will bring a huge influx of tourists to the area, which they say would benefit all.

"We're starting to get a skyline now and we're starting to sprout up," said John Faso, general manager of the Conference Center Niagara Falls. "People have a focal point. This is Niagara Falls and things are starting to grow. I think it's a positive."

Supporters cite the relative success of the Canadian side of the border, which does offer casinos and luxury resort tourist options. The US side of the border has in the past been considered to be the “dumpier” of the twin Niagara Falls cities, and proponents of the new project believe that the casino will help this region shed that image.

The casino and hotel complex, they say, will bring a more affluent type of tourist to the Niagara region. They are particularly eager to establish the site as a destination for lucrative professional conventions.
