Macau’s Booming Casino Industry Keeps Growing
Macau, China is a happening place! For the uninitiated, this former Portuguese colony is situated at the southeastern corner of mainland China, and was returned to China in 1999. Macau is fast becoming a favorite destination for high-rolling casino-goers.

It is reasonable to predict that Macau’s reputation for fabulous casino entertainment will only continue to grow in the coming years. In the past few weeks, casino companies of world-wide renown have been finalizing details of complexes of grandiose proportions in Macau, and other companies have been making their first inquiries. These casino giants include Wynn Resorts Ltd., owners of the famous Wynn chain in Las Vegas and elsewhere. Wynn Resorts will spend over $1 billion on its Macau project. The project will open for business in phases: late next summer, a luxury hotel and a casino will open, and the fall of 2007 will see the opening of additional casino space.

Also in the works is a casino complex that is the product of collaboration between Melbourne, Australia’s Crown Casino and Hong Kong's Melco International Ltd. One man is behind much of the island’s fame as an international casino-lover’s destination. David Chow, a businessman and politician who was born into a wealthy Chinese family in 1950, has invested millions of dollars to build several of Macau’s most successful casinos.

Mr. Chow, who was instrumental in lobbying the Macau government to end its decades-long state casino monopoly, says that the inspiration for his casinos came from his experiences in the United States. As a young man, he traveled to the United States to organize all-expense-paid casino junkets, becoming one of the most successful casino junket operators in the world.

Chow’s projects in Macau include the Landmark building, home to the Legend Club casino. It is one of the most luxurious casinos in the world, having been designed as a destination for Chinese and other high-rolling players. In fact, the very phrase “Legend Club” has become an international codeword for luxury, just as the words “Ritz Carlton” and “Plaza Hotel” readily summon images of sumptuous wealth.

Gaming rooms at the Legend Club casino are decorated lavishly, each in its own style. There is a room that resembles a tropical rain forest, and another that is a replicate of a baroque-style Italian villa. The most famous section of the casino, however, is done up as an Egyptian Pharaoh’s palace, complete with hieroglyphics and pyramid models. Customers may also take advantage of the club’s fleet of limousines and custom-made yachts.

Gambling is not new to Macau. In fact, Macau has long been known internationally as the “Monte Carlo of the Orient.” The casino industry has been around since 1847, when the Portuguese rulers of Macau legalized gambling. However, for many decades, there was a government-imposed monopoly on casino operation: the only company allowed to run gambling venues was the Society of Tourism and Recreation of Macau. It was only in 2002 that the Macau government opened the casino industry to other players. The government-run casino company, however, continues to play an important role, operating sixteen casinos.

These days, the casino business generates a whopping 40% of Macau’s GDP.
